  History Timeline

1962     The Humpty Dumpty Kindergarten began in Hobe Sound as the forerunner of the Hobe Sound Child Care        Center with Gertrude Pettway as the Center’s first director.

1964     The Hobe Sound Company donated land across from the Elementary School to the Hobe Sound Community Chest to be used for a non-profit child care center.

1965     The Hobe Sound Child Care Center was incorporated.

1969     New facility was erected on the donated land and funded by the Hobe Sound Community Chest

1984      The Hobe Sound Child Care Center building was completely destroyed by fire in June

1985     A new up to date facility was built.  Funds came mainly from the insurance settlement to the Community Chest and a fund-raising event        underwritten by twelve Jupiter Island residents.  There were also gifts from the Vestry of Christ Memorial Church and the Jupiter Island Residents Association.

1988     About 40 Jupiter Island residents created an endowment for the Center.  The income, along with help from the Hobe Sound Community Chest, enables the Board to keep tuition relatively low and to grant scholarships to needy families.

1991     An addition was put on the building to expand its capacity.

1992     In January the new wing – dedicated to Edwin T. Etherington was opened to meet the community’s growing needs. A butterfly garden was dedicated to Mrs. Joseph Reed for her many years of support. Also this year, First Lady Barbara Bush visited the Center and read to the children

1995     An oak tree was planted in memory of the children who died in the Oklahoma City bombing

1997     Vans were purchased for transporting the children to field trips.

Four new oak trees, a gift from The Jupiter Island Garden Club, were planted on the property

1998      Newly installed hurricane shutters make the center more secure and safe during storms.

1999     Hobe Sound Child Care Center receives national Accreditation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

2004     The playground was renovated with Mrs. John Jansing spearheading the project

2005     The VPK program was started

2006     A new bus was purchased with a generous gift from the residents of Loblolly.

2008     Hobe Sound Child Care Center receives APPLE Accreditation

2010     The first annual 5K Stampede was inaugurated

The Center installed a state of the art security system with generous support from the community.

2011     The playground was resurfaced with a gift from the residents of Loblolly.

The Puddle Duck program for one-year olds was initiated.

2012     The Center celebrated its 50th year anniversary and launched the new name change Hobe Sound Early Learning Center, to better reflect the Center’s programs.
